Name

In trying to define a name for this political organization, there was a conflict between not identifying with the Democratic Party and yet promoting democratic concepts and idealizations. There is real need to not also reject Republican Party philosophy as this is a party about resolving and discussing differences.

During the thought process, Burns & Allen publicity stunt of 1940 came to mind. While not a serious campaign, it seemed appropriate because it is believed that outcomes will surprise naysayers. So to be inclusive, the “Surprise Party” was selected to avoid becoming enmeshed with political stereotypes.

Our intent is to foster discussion and resolution in a manner that never, or at least rarely, alienates opposing views. The goal is to break the stalemate that bi-partisan politics inflicts on the nation.
